Village clip Arnett Gardens 2-1
Thursday, February 19, 2009
Preston Corporal's first-half double helped Village United to a 2-1 win over Arnett Gardens as the Trelawny side ousted their urban area rivals in the opening round of the Flow Champions Cup All-Island Knockout competition at the Tony Spaulding Complex yesterday.
Corporal opened his account from the penalty spot after just seven minutes and then made it 2-0 moments later with a strike from five yards.

The victory move Village into the second round of the competition, along with Reno, Meadhaven, Central and Holland.
Reno defeated Rae Town 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Gary McIntosh at Constant Spring. Ian Barnes pulled a goal back for Rae Town.
Central also scored a similar win over Frome at Rusea's School, with Ian Hanson and Loran Lewis scoring for Central. Adrian Robinson replied for Frome.
Holland also beat Prospect by a 2-1 score at Lacovia Community Centre. Goals came from Davian Wilson (26th) and Orville Taylor (71st). Prospect got their goal through Ricardo Richards (50th).
At Brook's Park, Meadhaven stopped Newgreen 1-0 through a goal from Rohan Williams.
At the Tony Spaulding Complex, Village found the back of the net almost from the opening whistle, but Narrian Grant's effort was ruled offside.
However, six minutes later, Dawkins latched onto a pass inside the area and was cut down by Julian McLeish. Corporal converted the resulting penalty to put his team ahead.
The midfielder then added a second after 19 minutes when he slammed in a low cross from the right from inside the six-yard box.
But the home team did have their fair share on chances, with Nicholas Dodd, Leon Strictland and Kevin Wilson all getting good opportunities.
Arnett came out with a lot more purpose in the second half but continued to waste good opportunties. However, after waves and waves of attacks, Wilson latched onto a loose ball and hit a low shot past Kemar Lewellyn in the Village goal.
But the home team continued to waste good scoring chances afterwards.
In time added on, Llewllyn had to be at his best to parry Wilson's free-kick from 20 yards. And player/coach Fabian Davis watched as his free-kick rattled the crossbar on the last play of the match.
"We took a while to settle down and when we did that we started to create chances... but if you don't score you don't win games and we only managed to score once today," Davis explained.
Village's coach Marvin White said his team, which consists of mainly Under-21 players, stepped up to the task.
"We just have to commend them and... see how far we can go with them... but with the performance we got today we expect to go all the way," he declared.
