Western Bureau:

Rivoli United came within a few seconds of ending Village United's unbeaten run in the 2009-10 Digicel Premier League this season but in the end, they gave up an added-time goal which resulted in the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

In the game, which was played at the Elliston Wakeland Youth Centre in Falmouth on Sunday, Rivoli United took the lead through top marksman Devon Hodges in the 15th minute but just when it looked like his goal was enough to give his team victory, Village United drew level through Cordell Simpson with the last kick of the game.

"Three points would have put us in a better position but such is life. We are a young team and we are still working to get it right," said Rivoli's coach Bradley Stewart, whose team stays unbeaten on six points after four games. "We controlled 92 minutes of the game and the one mistake cost us two points."

"We got some good looks at the goal in the first half but did not make use of our chances, so I am happy we got this late goal," said Village United's coach, Cassman Williams, whose team is also on six points from four games. "Part of our plan is to stay unbeaten for as long as possible."

Hodges put Rivoli in front when he took control of the ball between two defenders, dribbled two paces and fired past the goalkeeper, making the score 1-0.

Rivoli took control after their goal but despite creating several good openings, they failed to add to their tally by the half-time break.

The second half saw Rivoli controlling the run of play, creating several easy opportunities. The best came in the 63rd minute when the Village custodian failed to gather a cross and several players kicked and missed with the empty goal before them.

Rivoli also wasted back to back chances in the 83rd and 84th minutes, respectively, when Hodges mis-kicked before goal and Fidel Anderson failed to get his close range shot on target.

With seconds to go, a hasty clearance by a defender fell into the path of Simpson and his fierce volley left the goalkeeper a mere spectator as it crashed into the roof of the net.

Own goal at the death hands Village victory

WESTERN BUREAU:

Wayne Fairclough, coach of Waterhouse Football Club, has attributed complacency on the part of his players for the 3-2 loss to Village United in their Digicel Premier League match-up at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay, on Sunday night.

"I think complacency set in and I believe we could have really scored more goals, but I think that we allowed ourselves to be bogged down with those two goals which led to our demise," Fairclough said at the end of the game.

Doing better

Waterhouse remained joint second - alongside Portmore United - on 10 points, one behind leaders Harbour View, while Village, with their first win in five outings, leapt to five points.

Fairclough said Village had gotten the better of Waterhouse with the squares, especially since his players were, at times, not marking their opponents. He was, however, looking forward to doing better in their next engagement, when they play away to Tivoli Gardens.

Village rebounded in the second half after trailing 2-0 in the first 45 minutes of the game played in front of a handful of spectators. Roberto Fletcher and Jermaine Anderson had scored for Waterhouse in the 26th and 44th minutes, respectively.

Afterwards, Village's Fabian Dawkins and Eddie Kingston pulled off a goal each in the 53rd and 78th minutes. Waterhouse's fate was sealed following an own-goal caused by a goalkeeping error in the dying stages of the match.

Village's coach Dr Dean Weatherley said he was happy with the result, though disappointed with their performance in the first half.

"I think we were a bit impatient, lacking in composure in the first half and we were just giving up some simple, soft goals," Dr Weatherley said. "But we just reinforced the composure and reinforced being patient in front of the goal. We saw where Waterhouse were a bit lacking in terms of attacking the crosses and our forwards in the first half were just standing and looking."

Speaking of his team's second half recovery, Dr Weatherly said it was an indication of the team's class and courage.

"We brought on Eddie Kingston. He is one who attacks the ball very well in the 18-yard box and he gave us that goal that was so important. It shows our mettle, it shows the amount of talent that we have," he said. "We are just getting together and I have been saying from the beginning of the season, Village will definitely be a force to be reckoned with and we can't lose sight of our goals and we just have to go back to the drawing board, see where we went wrong in the first half and look ahead to a good season."

No pushover

Village will play away to Sporting Central in their next match-up and Dr Weatherley says he is looking forward to taking home three points, even though Sporting Central are no pushovers.

"Sporting Central is a very tough team with a lot of vibrant players. We definitely will try to get three points because that is our goal. We just have to sit down and assess how we are going to play against them," he said.

Dawkins inspires first Village victory

It took them all of 13 games, but Village United finally won their first game of the Cash Plus Premier League with a 2-0 win over St. Georges of Portland at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny yesterday.

Jamaica Under-20 representative Troy Smith opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 77th minute and Omar Allen put a closure on the proceedings with a 90th minute strike.

Goals

The architect of the victory was club stalwart Fabian Dawkins, who had a foot in both goals. For the first goal, his cross was handled by Dale Wallace and on the second, his cross was slotted home by Allen from inside the six-yard box.

Though the victory was an excellent result for the Trelawny-based team, they remained anchored at the bottom of the table on eight points, while St. Georges stayed on 18.

"I am really pleased with the way they played today. We spent a lot of time on finishing in the week leading up to the game as we were not scoring a lot before. We got a lot of chances today and converted twice, so I hope it is a new beginning," coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis told The Gleaner.

St Georges' Donovan Duckie said: "The guys were not focused. We were not ready for this game.

"The players are a good bunch but inexperienced at this level, so it was difficult to motivate them for this game after that (the midweek win over Harbour View)," said Duckie.

Dean's late brace saves Tivoli

Tivoli Gardens ......................... 2
Dean (80th, 85th)

FALMOUTH, Trelawny - A double strike by Roland Dean (80th and 85th minutes) enabled Tivoli Gardens to come from behind and salvage a point in their opening Cash Plus Premier League (CPPL) encounter with Village United which ended 2-2 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre yesterday.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the home team appeared set to bag the maximum three points from the game, after enjoying a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Troy Smith (45th) and Leon Irving (59th).
Both teams were locked in a 'cat and mouse' game in the early exchanges.

But just before the break, Village surged into the lead when Omar Allen, moving down the right flank, picked out an unmarked Smith with pinpoint cross. Smith, from an acute angle outside the 18-yard box, rifled a rasping left-footed grounder to the left corner of the goal, which gave goalie Leon Gordon no chance.

The Glendon Bailey-coached Tivoli came out fired up after the break in search of the equaliser, but suffered a further setback when Irving found the target with what at first seemed to be an innocuous shot.
The Falmouth-based team got a couple opportunities to extend their lead, but substitute Ricardo Reid was off target on both occasions.

Dean started his heroics when he flung himself into an Oraine Simpson cross which took the ball into the goal.
Five minutes later Dean was able to get on the end of a free-kick ahead of a group pedestrian Village defenders to slot home.
In time added on Dean just missed out on an opportunity to score a hat-trick and give his team full points when his unchallenged header whisked over the bar.

Village shock leaders W'House at home

Village...............................1
Bernard (13th)

Waterhouse......................0

Village United's Preston Bernard's 13th-minute strike handed league leaders Waterhouse their first National Premier League defeat of the season when they went down 1-0 to the Trelawny-based outfit at the Drewsland mini-stadium yesterday.

However, the Barrington Gaynor-coached team will stay atop the standings, two clear of nearest rivals, Harbour View.
"I don't think we had a good game today," Gaynor said. "We were rushing it and we gave up a goal, so we were always chasing," he added.

Meanwhile, it was a work-man-like display from the visitors, who showed more initiative in the opening minutes, and were justly rewarded when Bernard steered a left-side cross past Richard McCallum in the Waterhouse goal.

The hosts were lacklustre for most of the half, and their best chances to score came late in the half, but neither Brian Wollaston nor Roberto Fletcher could capitalise on the opportunities.

Village were resilient throughout, and Luke Tate came close with a header on the half-hour, but kicked wide of the target.
Five minutes after the resumption, Village had the first and the best chance to increase their lead but Tate's tame shot wasn't enough to beat McCallum from six yards.

Ten minutes later, Edward Campbell split the Waterhouse defence with a through pass to Tate but he hesitated and allowed the recovering defence to win possession.

With time running out, the home team stepped up their game and had a number of chances to get a goal back, but goalkeeper Leighton Murray and his defence were in fine form.

Village coach Fitzroy Reid said it was a well-worked game plan by his team.

"Our plan was not to allow Waterhouse to pick up a rhythm. Then we got an early goal and I think that did the trick," he said.

Teams:

Waterhouse - Richard McCallum, Irvino English, Marco McDonald, Craig White, Michael Stone, Oneil Thomas, Damian Williams (Andre Hickling 73rd), Oneil Robinson (Kirk Ramsey 46th), Brain Walloston (Vincenty Earle 65th), Roger Rodney, Roberto Fletcher.

Village United hand Harbour Veiw thier first defeat of the 2006 season

HARBOUR VIEW suffered their first loss of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League season when they were beaten 2-1 by Village United at the Compound on Wednesday evening.

The team has now slipped to second place in the standings behind defending champions, Waterhouse, who had a comfortable 3-0 win over Wadadah at Jarrett Park.

The 'Stars of East' came out in the first-half firing on all cylinders and quickly went ahead in the 14th minute when captain Lovel Palmer volleyed home a fine right- sided cross from teammate, Gregg Taylor.

Palmer threatened again a few minutes later, but his left-footed effort was spectacularly saved by goalkeeper Andre Moore.

Kevin Bryan thought he had sent Harbour View further ahead later in the half, but his header on goal was just wide of the target as the Village players were forced to defend for almost the entire first half.

Upon resumption, Harbour View continued to dominate game and created numerous opportunities, but were let down owing to poor finishing from the likes of Loxley Thomas and Bryan Palmer.

After watching his team soak up all the pressure from Harbour View, Cassman Williams, coach of Village, turned to his bench and it quickly paid dividends as in the 65th minute substitute, Luke Tate, fired home the equaliser.

Second victory

Another substitute, Omar Allen, struck in the 90th minute with a rasping 20-metre right-footer past goalkeeper Moore to give his team its second victory of the season. Williams, who is the interim coach of Village owing to the absence of Dr. Dean Weatherly, said: "It's always good to get three points at the opponents' ground.

" I think the guys really played well in the second half today. We didn't played well in the first half and Harbour View created a lot of chances, but we went in at half-time and made some adjustments and it paid and I am really happy," he said.

Lenworth Hyde, coach of Harbour View, was disappointed with his team's performance. "We played very well in the first- half, but in the second period we just lapsed," said Hyde.

Bennett strikes as Boyz stave off USA

CARY, North Carolina - Jamaica's well-sought after win against CONCACAF rivals USA remains elusive as both teams played out an exciting 1-1 draw in a friendly international as the SAS Soccer Park here last night.

The Reggae Boyz, in a gutsy rendition, sprung into the lead in only the fourth minute courtesy of Virginia Beach Mariners' Teofore Bennett. The Americans rallied in the 25th minute thanks to Ben Olsen.

In the first minute of play a terrible back pass by Claude Davis nearly cost the Boyz, but goalkeeper Dovovan Ricketts was quick off his line to clear the danger.

Jamaica made amends with a goal when Ricketts' quick throw-out was well-received by Kansas City Wizards' Jermaine Hue. The crafty former Harbour View midfielder's perfectly-weighted pass found Bennet on a gallop and the Virginia Beach Mariners' frontman was smooth in rounding Tony Meola before shooting with the left foot into an empty goal.

But though they were trailing, the Americans' play remained positive as they passed the ball around in search of openings in a Jamaica defence determined to preserve their 1-0 lead.

In another constructive forward play in the 22nd minute, Hue, as slick as ever, played a clever chip ball for Bennett, whose right-side cross was too much for debutant Ryan Johnson to manage as the Real Salt Lake man could only get a shade of his left-foot on the ball.

The USA's industry paid off in the 25th when Ben Olsen collected Landon Donovan's pass into the area, and the midfielder's well-struck low drive bounced under the sprawled out frame of Ricketts and into the net.

In the 31st minute, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, in a display of skill down his favourite rightside, got around Chris Albright and the ensuing cross was met by Ryan Johnson in the centre, but the latter's shot was blocked.

In time added, it looked almost certain that the home side would take the lead when Taylor Twellman slipped between Garfield Reid and Damion Stewart, but the latter's younger brother, Demar, made a sliding effort to deny the American frontman.

The first 45 minutes provided exciting play from both teams, but the edge must be given to the USA as they made several inroads into the heart of the Boyz' defence. However, stout defending by the latter kept the scoreboard even going into the dressing room.

In minute 54 Ricketts pulled off a spectacular one-handed save, tipping Albright's powerful close-range header over the horizontal.
